From their roots in England, Ireland, and Scotland, spirituals began their adaptation into the log-cabin churches built by pioneers and their descendants as they settled in the Appalachian Mountains. Their faith was strong and diverse, and their music quickly became a reflection of those values. They had the “faith of a mustard seed”, and they did move mountains!
