Timeless Christmas Treasures Plus the Modern Classic My Christmas Prayer.BeBe Winans marks his label debut on The Movement Group / Hidden Beach Recordings with a fifteen-song Christmas set that lights up all of the standard carols and classics, with a few originals tossed in too.
Scenes of blazing fireplaces, crackling logs, Christmas cake, yams and turkey easily come to mind as Winans wraps his big, warm voice around cuts such as 'Oh Little Town ofBethlehem', 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and 'Joy To The World'. Hefty dollops of choir in the background adds the necessary backing vocal dimensions.
Plenty of strings bed the project, with piano, bells and just the right touches of percussion too. Winans and musician Tom Hemby join forces in producing, and embrace the tender melodies of 'Oh Holy Night', 'What Child Is This' and 'A Cradle In Bethlehem'.
The album’s title track features the unusual event of a duet, as Rob Thomas of rock band Matchbox 20 fame joins in. The two voices are a wonderful blend of tones and vocal colors, expressing the hope of well wishes and sharing of friendship, burdens and love. 'My Christmas Prayer' may just be the album highlight. (Winans reprises the song later in the album, adding a bit more soul, as his mom, Delores Winans, ably steps in to the vacated duet spot.)
That big jazz vibe marks 'Yes, It’s Christmas', with star guests, The U.S. Air Force Reserve Jazz Ensemble adding their considerable punch to Winans’ croon.
Also on the project is Winans’ courageous, guitar-hushed Gospel cover of George Harrison’s 'My Sweet Lord'. With chorus echoes of 'Hallelujah', Winans turns the song’s lyrics around to make no doubt that his praise is to Jesus Christ.
BeBe Winans’ My Christmas Prayer is ageless, recalling the glorious yuletide sounds of old, and is the perfect sound for any December occasion.
