Growing up in Ohio, Marty's home was filled with the traditional music of his immigrant parents. Marty grew to love those songs, but like most his age he longed to sing rock and roll. Stints in local bars were unsatisfying; Marty ended up playing in the 'Borscht Belt' hotels of New York's Catskills as half of the award-winning due Bert and Marty. When the duo broke up, Marty's career took him to the West Coast where he spent a decade as Debbie Boone's band leader, playing along with her pop hits, songs the reflected Boone's own fascination with Israel and the Jewish faith.

And as a solo artist, Marty evolved into a career playing modern songs of faith that led to him being dubbed a 'contemporary psalmist'. It seemed that no matter where he played and what he did it was Goetz's quiet destiny to return to his heritage.
