Lyrics IncludedWhen I was in school at the University of Kansas, I took some classes in the film studies building, Oldfather Studios. The main room there, the Herk Harvey Sound Stage, was huge (about 70 by 140 feet), and had an unusual sound to it because of the way it was insulated on the walls and ceilings. I thought, back then in 1992, that it would be a really cool place to make an album. Ten years later, we did. Here's how it happened.
In the Spring, I decided to record a bunch of songs I'd written. Some were old, some new. I figured that, while some of them would be great purely as a solo endeavor others really called for a band. Having been in a band called Waterdeep for the past sever years, I decided to gather all the folks - past, present, and future members, as well as a bit of the extended musical family - and record these songs together in this big room in Lawrence. I did a lot of home recording to sketch out the arrangements and parts ahead of time, sent these demo CDs to the players, and had a few individual rehearsals with various members. However, the whole band had never been in one place until we gathered on May 24, 2002. At that point, several of the players met each other for the first time ever. Old relationships were rekindled, new ones formed.
